Jaw Release Therapy

A whole-body approach to jaw tension, clenching and grinding.
COMING TO BURTON HEALTH LATE 2026

Do you clench or grind your teeth?

Jaw tension is incredibly common. You might notice yourself clenching your teeth while concentrating, wake with a tight or aching jaw, experience clicking or tension around the face, or have been told by your dentist that you're grinding your teeth at night.

A mouth guard can be important for protecting your teeth from the effects of grinding, but it doesn't necessarily address the tension itself or why you may be clenching in the first place.

You might experience:

  • Jaw clenching during the day

  • Teeth grinding at night

  • A tight or tired jaw when you wake

  • Jaw or facial tension

  • Clicking or popping around the jaw

  • Tension through the temples

  • Neck and shoulder tension

  • A feeling that you can't completely relax your jaw

What is Jaw Release Therapy?

Despite the name, Jaw Release Therapy isn't just about working on the jaw.

Treatment can involve areas throughout the body, from the face and neck right down to the feet, as well as the fascia that connects it all together.

It's this whole-body approach that particularly interests me.

Jaw tension, clenching and grinding already come up regularly in my clinic.

During naturopathic consultations, I may use herbs and nutrients to support muscle relaxation and the nervous system, as well as looking at factors such as stress and sleep.

During massage treatments, I already incorporate some work around the jaw, face, neck and upper body.

Undertaking specialised training in Jaw Release Therapy will allow me to take this work further and introduce a more focused treatment for jaw and facial tension at Burton Health.

What does a Jaw Release treatment involve?

Jaw Release Therapy takes a whole-body approach to jaw tension, combining targeted work around the jaw with hands-on treatment throughout the body.

Treatment may involve the face, jaw, head and neck, as well as the shoulders, chest, ribs and diaphragm, extending through the arms, hands and feet where appropriate.

Gentle intraoral techniques can also be used, with gloved hands working on muscles inside the mouth that aren't easily accessed externally.

At Burton Health, I can also draw on my naturopathic background to look at factors that may be contributing to muscle and nervous system tension, incorporating lifestyle, nutritional and herbal medicine where appropriate.
